Teaching History through Stories

You spent two weeks teaching the Revolutionary War, the dates, the battles, the maps, but by Friday, it's all gone. Students don't remember anything. But the story about the mountain man who survived a bear attack and walked 200 miles on a broken leg back to his camp. They'll still talk about that in May.
This isn't a fluke; it's how memory works. Research done at Stanford by Sam Wineburg has shown that elementary students build historical understanding through narratives, not timelines and vocabulary lists. While vobac & timelines give students context, historical figures, setting, conflicts, and consequences stick with students. Without stories, dates just become a number.
