HOW TO USE
This packet has been designed for two to three days of instruction. The purpose is to give students a cultural understanding of Chinese New Year traditions and introduce them to the Chinese Zodiac Signs with the two informational texts.
On the first day, read the informational text, "The Chinese New Year." There are comprehension questions designed to assess their comprehension, and then make the Chinese lantern. Give students a piece of tape and have them hang theirs somewhere around the classroom. This gives it a fun and festive feel!
On the second day, read the informational text, "How the Zodiac Began." There are comprehension questions as well as a page showing all of the Zodiac signs and their characteristics! This is a great day to let students watercolor paint the dragon, as it is the "Year of the Dragon!"
On the third day, students will write their own Chinese couplet. Poetry is such a fun, expressive way for students to express themselves. Students that are not traditionally good at writing, have a chance to really shine when writing poetry! This is also a fun way to assess student understanding.
A great way to celebrate student work is to display their poems and dragon paintings in the hallway! Other classes LOVE seeing the dragons, teachers LOVE reading the poems, administrators LOVE seeing the creativity, and parents LOVE the Instagram opportunity 😉
